Question: I have never rowed before.  Can I join GDRA Juniors?

Yes! All of our rowers have never rowed before coming to Greater Dayton Rowing. Additionally most of the member of the United States Olympic Rowing Team never touched an oar before age 16.

Question: What are the time commitments involved with Rowing?

As Rowing is the ultimate team sport, it is important to attend all practices. For our JETS program, practice is Monday-Friday 4:00p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Our PILOTS program meets Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 4:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. We offer programs during each season, Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. Summer and Spring are our main competitive seasons, and Fall and Winter are focused on developing rowing technique and an aerobic base.

Question: Do I need to participate year round, or can I play other sports?

While year round training will help prepare you for our competitive seasons, we have many athletes who play a variety of sports, from soccer, cross-country, wrestling, swimming and many others. As mentioned above our main competition is during the Spring and Summer, when we compete in several local, regional and national regattas.

Question: I heard that rowers are tall, do I need to be tall? Don't rowers have really strong arms?

Rowers comes in all sizes, as a general rule, height is a great advantage however we find that good athletes tend to rise to expectations regardless of physical attributes. Additionally rowing is primarily about cardiovascular fitness and the strength of legs rather than arms. We don't turn anyone anyway who is willing to meet the requirements of our programs.

Question: How much does Rowing cost?

Rowing at Greater Dayton is very reasonably priced and is on par with other sports organizations in the area/region. No athlete is ever turned away for financial reasons.

Question: Are Scholarships available?

Yes! Need based scholarships are available to any athlete who desires to be a part of our team.

Question: Do you really row during the Winter?

No, not necessarily. Safety is a our paramount concern at Greater Dayton, we do not hold water practices when the water temperature is below 40 degrees and the combined air and water temperature is above 85 degrees. During the months of December, January and February we train indoors at our Indoor Training Facility.
